A plant needs a mother

My mother knows how to keep plants growing. She gives them water at the correct times; not too much to drown and not too little to thirst. She keeps them near her windows to soak up all the light. Surely she's had some plants that have struggled, but her house is filled with plants that are thriving. And she is always looking forward to the blossoms.

These two are dear friends to me. I met them in Aachen, Germany, and we shared a lot together about God, and family, and life and love and work. We laughed a lot. I received a phone call last month from Johnson, to tell me Lola had given birth to a son. They have older children about my age, so it was certainly a surprise for her and they are so happy. I am hopeful to meet their little boy soon.

This photograph is abstracted from a painting by the artist Mark Rothko, Untitled (Black, Red over Black on Red), 1964 at Le Centre Pompidou in Paris. The first time I saw Rothko paintings in person was at the Tate Modern in London, and I was surprised as I began crying. Standing close enough to the paintings to be totally immersed in the color was really a spiritual experience for me. I later had a friend give me the BBC series Simon Schama's The Power of Art, highlighting various artists, one of them being Rothko. Schama talks about his impressions, looking at some of Rothko's final paintings, as "gateways" and "open portals into unknown places" that are "meant to embrace" and express the "poignancy of our comings and goings, our entrances and exits, our births and deaths."

I'm thinking of Rothko and these sentiments in connection with another exceptional artist, Richard Wells. I had the pleasure to learn art history from him at university, and he passed away last week. He most often would wear black clothing with accents of white, plus red socks that peeked vibrantly through the black. Those colors are so striking together, and always feel extra expressive to me. This Rothko piece in black and red reminds me of Professor Wells for that reason, and with Schama's ideas that Rothko's work is "about forever, feeling the eons rolling by," I feel honor for Richard Wells and his loving family, and hope the "poignancy" of his passing will be matched by the peace of their Forever.

For Christmas 2010, we skipped town for Puerto Rico. Stayed in Luquillo which is located near El Yunque, the only *tropcial* rain forest in the US National Forest System. It was wet and moody, vibrant with colors and lush. I guess as it should be, it's a tropical rain forest :)

I've been daydreaming of Paris so much this week. Which is okay, except that here at home the weather is finally warming and the plants and trees and flowers are turning into a lovely Spring.

I'm guessing the restlessness has something to do with: 1) having lived in Boston for just over two years, and 2) having been at my current job for almost two years. According to the last eight years of my life, this is when I pack up and move to another city, another job, another adventure. Well, now I'm a married lady, and there's just so much to learn!

As compared to me, my Robert is actually an adult and has a real-life career. So...we won't be spontaneously moving within the next few months?? Oh. Hmm. I'll just try to travel more often?? This may be an appropriate time in my life to think more in terms of we than I. To learn how to give and to receive. To be brave in my goals for my career. And to travel.

Luquillo Beach, Puerto Rico

We played at this beach on Christmas Day 2010. The red sand of the beach was gorgeous! Playing in the waves (we weren't the only ones) on a cloudy/rainy day, prompted a local couple to approach and give us a warning to be careful! I felt a little upset by this, I mean, yes we were very white-skinned tourists, but I've been swimming in Waimea Bay on the North Shore during the winter! What did they know about me?! We knew they meant well, so we relaxed for a bit as they walked away, to let them have that good feeling that they saved some people's lives that day. Then we got back to tumbling in the waves :)

I am part of an *exciting* project! Along with a few other photographers in Windsor, Vermont, we are photographing 250 people to celebrate the 250th birthday of the town. Windsor is where the Vermont constitution was signed and Vermont became a state. Many well-known politicians and artists have contributed to Windsor's rich history and creativity. For me, when I first came to New England I lived with my dear friends in Windsor for one month before moving to Boston, and I visit them regularly. Rob and I love the town and area so much that we married there!

We are raising funds for the project on Kickstarter.com. It's a website that helps fund creative ideas, allowing people to support and contribute through donations, which can be as little as $1. If you're interested, please visit the project page and become a 'backer!' I am looking forward to recording a snapshot of Windsor in 2011 through portraits of it's people.

Unique Growth

I was looking over these photos from two winters past, and thinking about how we often associate Winter with death and Spring with life. But Winter is not void of growth and life. Trees live through the cold, and finally show the complexity of their branches which support the leaves we love. And it's different, but the layers of snow are growing, and the icicles are growing, and we make it through the chill. So I like looking at these images for their shape and texture and tone and complexity. For the growth and change they represent in a very unique way, unique to the winter season.

I'm a few days late to post these images for Halloween, a day that would actually be mildly appropriate - I apologize if you need to stop looking and hide these images from your children, because they are spooky! You may wonder, what type of person spends their birthday wandering below the streets of Paris among the catacombs?? Well, I'm your gal. Plus my friends Jenn and Dann - I wouldn't have survived alone, mwa ha ha. Honestly, it was quite sobering, walking among bones, stacked upon bones, upon more bones, for almost one hour. So many people who once lived, now dead, names unknown; only their bones as proof they walked the streets of Paris one-hundred-plus years ago. We enjoyed some other, not-so-morbid activities on my birthday as well, but this adventure left quite an impression.

Rob and I road-tripped to Montreal, Canada for our honeymoon, and our first day after wandering the city, returning to the hotel, we exited the Metro and made a wrong turn...'wrong turn' is relative at this point because instead of our hotel entrance we found a photo booth! So naturally we had to get some photos! We fully enjoyed the city as well, but yes, I was overly excited about returning to the photo booth each day :) And yes, I often wear the color gray.

The big news in my life is that I'M GETTING MARRIED IN THREE DAYS!! Ha ha, whoot! To Mr. Robert Hall :) These few images are from one of our favorite places, Windsor, Vermont, and specifically the Snapdragon Inn, where, among family and dear friends, we will wed! We've been apart of the renovation process, with our friends and owners, of this beautiful house into a nine-bedroom Inn, and these photographs are a few I've taken around Windsor which are hanging on the Inn walls. I was in Germany the day their football team beat England in the World Cup game. It was CRAZY!! And hilarious! The people made their own parade on the streets, honking car horns for hours (HOURS!) and driving around hanging out of their cars with flags, people rejoicing on the sidewalks...It was awesome! I was looking back on the years through Alicia's blog today, and I snagged some pictures from her that are just so delightful to me! Our wise friend Terri told us then that we had something so special in our few years together on Cedar Ave, and that we'd miss it immensely. We all knew she was right, but yeah, now I feel it. I feel it. Memories are so powerful. What love and hope I feel for these women - Alicia, Maria, Mckenzie, Gladriel, Terri, Jessica and Jenn. My oh my, how I feel it, the missing of these women in my daily days. So, I have a few friends here in Boston, including a family of three, Felicity Salmon and Nathaniel Hansen plus son, Asher. They are incredible and inspiring with their talents and goodness, and I've not done this much on my blog, but want to make a shout out for Nathaniel.

He's a documentary filmmaker, and his work is positively moving. There are a few artists whom I follow (and always more to find!) for the beauty and empowering nature of their work. Nathaniel is one of these, with the clean and articulate style he presents, and his respect for the lives and stories of the people with whom he speaks.

He has been working with Kickstarter.com to fund a new project called The Elders, and I'm so happy he received enough donations and his film will be funded by all who contributed!!! I love it!

I learned quite a few lessons while photographing this wedding - #1 being that rainy days can be great for a wedding! Jill and Shanker, plus their friends and family, have proven that torrential downpours all night before and the morning of your wedding can never stop the power of love!! The ceremony was incredibly intimate and touching. And when the rain finally subsided, all the colors of the surrounding nature were so rich. Quite simply, the true beauty and goodness of the occasion filled the day with happiness. I am feeling saddened by some recent events in the lives of friends and in the world. There are so many prayers reaching the heavens. So much hope. Holding on to hope. Like my new niece, Mia, holding on to my sister's finger with such strength. I feel honored to know and love the people whom I know and love. I asked them to try a blank expression for these photos. Believe me, I love smiles. I think it's similar to the variances between black and white or color photographs for me. The presence of color itself pulls attention, like smiles and laughter. Color is a Love. And looking at the tones of gray pulls my attention to such smooth skin and the shape of the lips and the eyes, the eyes in such portraits; also a Love.

The funny thing is, and I feel silly admitting, that although I can actually look at the back of my camera and see exactly which film I'm using, I had thought I was photographing with color when taking these! I was so focused on the colors of their eyes, that when I got them developed I was surprised and equally delighted to see other details I had not fully noticed. These two girls are most definite Loves.

Organic Aesthetics

I've just been reviewing some photos from my past lives, and I really want to throw some color back on this blog! In Hawaii I had a photo exhibit when finishing my studies, and I had these plus other images on display. Some basic elements of art and design include line, shape, texture, color...and I was fascinated by the inherently unique elements of art in these plants.

I say 'past lives' because I feel my life comprises various chunks of time, phases, that all feel like a different lifetime to me. There are aspects of each phase that I miss, although I suspect I'm not actually at a loss, but that each element stays with me in one form or another. Like unique elements creating a distinctive design.

The building where I go to church here in Cambridge burned on Sunday, May 17. Sadness. I got back in town from a trip on Monday and went to see the damage. It's amazing that everybody got out safely and so many fire units came to help stop the fire. The First Church Cambridge has offered their building to us after their services, so we'll have a place to meet on Sunday! Very kind! The brick perimeter of the building is still standing, so the plan is to rebuild the interior, which should take about 12 to 18 months. Yeah.

These photos were taken in February, and all this ice is now definitely melted, but I was lucky to visit a Finnish sauna here in Mass! If it felt too hot in the sauna, we just went out to take a dip in the incredibly cold lake, but since you can warm up again, the whole process was very refreshing! Ami is one of the first friends after my move here, he being European and having a lovely smile and all, and will soon be returning to Suomi, where he'll have sauna-time everyday...the sauna was 'invented' there, of course.

I've been getting even more practice recently, but these kids, on this day, are a beauty. The Price's smile so easily! Natalie Norton is a talented photographer and friend, and I'm lucky to know their family since the days they started it. I am fully impressed! Impressed by children and by parents who love their children!

I present Aimee and Kumu, whom I met in 2000 while studying in Hawaii. They dated then, and went off around the world having their own separate adventures for a time, but found each other again and are getting married next weekend!! I photographed their engagements in Hawaii in November, and I'm the lucky girl who gets to visit them in May to take photos of their party at the Golden Gardens Bathhouse in Seattle. Happy days.

Just to remind us all why I'm posting photos from Hawaii...I attended a workshop there a few months ago in November, and I'm going to make a big push to show the rest of the goodies I found there within the next two weeks because I have so many new photos I want to share! This was a fun Waimea day; the lifeguards were very cool to let me chill with them and get some photos. My first year living in Hawaii those many years ago, my freshman friends and I were on this beach essentially everyday...but of all my years there, this visit was the first time seeing a shark in the water! Ha ha, no, I didn't get any photos of the shark...

A few things that regularly occur on the North Shore of Oahu include, but are not limited to: Hitch-hiking, surf competitions, massive waves breaking directly on the shore, bikes being 'borrowed' and occasionally returned, lots of shaved-ice and fish being consumed, and jumping off rocks that are sometimes twenty, thirty feet high into the beautiful ocean! Sound intense? Sometimes people get hurt while playing in, around, or near the ocean. Well, probably everyone at one point or another. I've been fortunate not to endure too many injuries, although sometimes when I'm looking down from up high, and there isn't water below me, I need to sit down, just to make sure I don't follow through with the sensation to jump :-)

Okay, because I'm feeling...first of all, let me just say, I really miss my blond hair!! But more importantly, much more importantly, I miss this Erik, this Bettilee, and this Phillip!!! These three are my younger siblings! They are hilarious, loving and FUN! Throughout my childhood and teenage years, I really didn't imagine how their personalities and choices would be affecting my adult life, and I am happily surprised. Erik, you are in the warmth of New Mexico...Betti and Phil, you are in the warmth of Utah...I am in the snowstorms of Boston and loving you! You are part of my heart. Lucky heart.
